I was born in Washington, DC and resettled in Central Virginia in 1984. I have a B.S. in Communication from James Madison University, and I've always felt I had a "knack" for doing voice characterizations. I'm just now having the time to turn my long-hidden talent into more than just a hobby. My first revelation of actually doing a voice characterization/accent was on live radio. I was working for a radio station in the late 1990s, and the DJs there needed a "lady with an Irish accent," to tie in with St. Patrick's Day, so I kind of just put one on and we went with it. The three of us ad-libbed the whole thing, just talking about silly things and the DJ's "interviewing" me about Ireland and the Blarney Stone. It was pretty funny, and the bit went on for about 5 minutes. When it was over, I went back to the reception desk, and a few moments later I got a phone call from a woman asking to speak with Katy Shillelagh! Another instance was when I met Mick Taylor, the lead guitarist of the rock band, Foreigner. He's British, and as he was signing my guitar, we started chatting, and I started mimicking his accent, and he asked, "Where in London are you from?" Those instances kind of spoke to me about my knack for doing accents and voice characterizations. So here I am! Please check out my audio files while you're here! Thanks for visiting.
